When the author was a child her grandmother used to entrance her with accounts of what she had worn when she was young. Button boots, tucked bodices and caped coats could be understood, but what were camisoles and chemises? This book is largely the outcome of satisfying a curiosity about underclothes. Although histories of underwear have said a great deal about the actual garments, it is often difficult to work out the order in which they were worn. This book is a solution to the problem by showing the undressing sequence of the fashion styles from different years.
